How to Install a Trailer Hub: Step-by-Step Guide
Installing a trailer hub correctly is essential for safe towing and smooth bearing operation. This guide walks you through tools, preparation, and each step of the installation process.
Tools and Supplies Needed
- Jack and jack stands
- Lug wrench
- Torque wrench
- Wheel bearing grease (marine grease for boat trailers)
- Grease gun (for EZ-Lube axles)
- Hammer or rubber mallet
- Flathead screwdriver
- New cotter pin
Step-by-Step Installation
1. Lift and Secure the Trailer
Park on a flat surface, use wheel chocks, raise the trailer with a jack, and place jack stands safely.
2. Remove the Wheel
Loosen and remove the lug nuts, then take off the wheel.
3. Remove Dust Cap and Cotter Pin
Pry off the dust cap, remove the cotter pin, and take off the castle nut and washer.
4. Slide Off the Old Hub
Pull the hub straight outward, catching the outer bearing.
5. Clean the Spindle
Wipe away old grease and inspect the spindle for wear, rust, or heat discoloration.
6. Pack Bearings with Grease
Pack inner and outer bearings thoroughly with high-temp or marine grease.
7. Install Inner Bearing and Grease Seal
Insert the inner bearing and tap the grease seal in evenly using a mallet.
8. Slide New Hub onto Spindle
Add outer bearing, washer, and castle nut.
9. Adjust Bearing Preload
Tighten the castle nut while spinning the hub; then back off 1/4 turn and align cotter pin hole.
10. Install Cotter Pin and Dust Cap
Insert a new cotter pin and tap the dust cap back in place.
11. Reinstall Wheel and Torque Lug Nuts
Tighten lug nuts in a star pattern and torque to manufacturer specs.
Safety and Maintenance Tips
- Use marine grease for boat trailers
- Replace seals and cotter pins every time
- Recheck lug nut torque after 50–100 miles
- Grease EZ-Lube hubs until clean grease appears
Following this guide ensures smooth towing, long hub life, and reliable bearing performance for any trailer setup.
